High-speed feed system based on parallel (virtual axis) mechanism:

Conventional machine tools work in Cartesian coordinates. The most typical layout of this machine is to mount the workpiece on the orthogonal workbench to realize the movement of the X and Y axes. The spindle components are mounted on the column slide to realize the Z-axis motion. The total mass of the moving parts of the machine (workpieces, fixtures, tables, etc.) is relatively large, and the motion resistance generated by the multi-layer rails makes it difficult for the machine to achieve high feed rates and accelerations. In addition, the conventional machine tool is a series system, which has many components and complicated structures, and often has a cantilever component and a coupling gap, so that it is difficult for the machine tool to obtain high rigidity. The emergence of parallel (virtual axis) machine tools has opened up a new way to solve the above problems.

Each rod is driven by a ball screw or a linear motor to adjust and control the different lengths of the six rods (real shaft), so that the tool on the electric spindle can be moved in six degrees of freedom, so that the mounting is fixed at work. This structure was proposed in the 1960s, but since all six real axes that affect the spindle must move, the calculation is extremely complicated, and there is no way to use it at that time. Only in today's highly developed CNC technology, the application of parallel machine tools has become possible, and a variety of design solutions have emerged. The main advantages of this parallel mechanism feed system are as follows:

(1) High feed rate At the same motor drive speed, the space parallel mechanism can achieve higher feed speed than the series mechanism of the conventional machine tool. The parallel machine tool does not have a table moving along the fixed rail and its supporting members, which eliminates the frictional resistance of the rail pair and is beneficial to the further improvement of the feed speed.

(2) High acceleration The workpiece on the machine is fixed, and all coordinate movements are completed by a 6-pole electric spindle. The moving part has a small mass, and the driving force for the tool is a combined force of 6 rods, so the driving force is large, and it is easy to obtain a high feed motion acceleration.

(3) Stiffness The large drive rod is not only the transmission component of the machine tool, but also the support component of the spindle unit, which reduces the connection link and transmission gap of the “machine tool-tool” workpiece system, and cancels the cantilever structure of the conventional machine tool, 6 The rod is only subjected to tension and compression without bending moments, which greatly increases the overall rigidity of the machine tool. This parallel feed system also has the following disadvantages: there are many coordinate axes, and 6 axes are required for linear motion. Therefore, the programming is complicated and the operation is not intuitive; the length of 6 poles is large, and the thermal deformation has a serious influence on the machining accuracy. Therefore, the current machining accuracy is not too high; the effective space of the machining is not commensurate with the ratio of the machine tool itself, and its processing capability is also limited. These issues have yet to be resolved.
